Training for the Real World: Advanced Well Control with Simulation
Well Control training for drilling personnel is often limited to biennial Well Control certification courses. While these classroom-based courses give personnel a solid grounding in the fundamentals of well control principles and test these on a simulator, they only expose the trainees to the minimum-required level of well control scenarios and downhole conditions.
Realistically, the wells drilled by most crews are far more challenging than those covered in a standard well control course. Wells are often inclined, drilled with oil-based drilling fluids, or are affected by a number of more subtle external conditions. Crews whose only training has been in standard well control courses may lack confidence when encountering more complex conditions.
Attendees on Aberdeen Drilling School’s Advanced Well Control course will be challenged by realistic well control scenarios played out on a full-size fig-floor DS-5000 drilling simulator with an experienced instructor, who will ask them to take decisions on the best methods of dealing with each situation. Team decisions are encouraged and the team may find that they have to think more creatively to understand what caused the conditions and to decide the best methods to return themselves to pre-planned operational conditions.
This highly interactive practical course is designed for experienced operations personnel to enhance their understanding of how to deal with a variety of well control conditions in a challenging but safe environment. The course aims to advance the well control knowledge and understanding of drilling superintendents, drilling supervisors, well-site engineers, toolpushers, drillers and other drill crew members looking to upskill their well control knowledge and increase operational competency levels.
