Here at Aberdeen Drilling School, we often get enquiries from individuals seeking entry into the oil & gas industry. We hear from a broad spectrum of prospective entrants; some seeking seeking vocational courses leading to a career, and many simply seeking advice. This article aims to impart some helpful and objective information and provide other useful links – because when you’re job hunting, either as a new graduate or as someone looking for a career change, research is crucial.

For those hoping to find a course which will lead to a career offshore please be advised that despite our “drilling school” name, we do not run training designed for new entrants as we are not a “vocational” training organisation (e.g. we don’t offer training specifically for someone who wants to become an Assistant Driller).

We provide awareness and specialist courses designed for people already in the industry. The awareness training provides non-technical personnel with foundation level knowledge of the technology and terminology associated with drilling and well services. The majority of people attending these courses are working in the industry and are sponsored by their employers, as these types of courses heighten awareness and improve communication throughout the organisation. Our specialist courses vary in scope but are designed for individuals and for client companies aiming to improve safety and efficiency across drilling and well services operations.

“What is Well Control and who is it for?”

Well Control training and certification is designed for personnel involved in well control during drilling and well intervention operations. A well control certificate in conjunction with work experience is a demonstration of competence in recognising and dealing with well control situations (i.e. blowout prevention) rather than a qualification.

It should be recognised that going through any of these courses would not necessarily help your chances of getting work in drilling or well services. There are a number of different routes to take when it comes to entering the oil and gas industry. The links below will take you to various sites which may help to point you in the right direction.
